Denture Care

If you want your dentures to function properly and last a long time, it is important to take care of them. Paying attention to your gums and ridges, as well as implementing a regular cleaning routine, are key aspects of denture care that contribute to your oral health and overall satisfaction with your dentures.

I recommend you wear your dentures at night and follow these guidelines in wearing your dentures – salt water, salt water, salt water! — Dr. Miller

Rinsing With Warm Saltwater:

Saltwater rinses have numerous benefits, including promoting healthy tissues and reducing inflammation due to its 84-mineral content. We recommend using pink Himalayan salt for full use of these minerals. Use one teaspoon of salt in 6-8 ounces of warm water, mixed well, to rinse your mouth twice a day.

Daily Cleaning Routine:

We recommend brushing your dentures with toothpaste every day, like you would your normal teeth. Giving them a good long soak in white vinegar once a week also helps prevent plaque buildup and staining. For more persistent stains, use vinegar and baking soda to gently clean their surface. However, if you encounter persistent issues, it is recommended to bring your dentures to our medical denturist practitioner for a free cleaning.

Avoid Store-Bought Denture Cleaners:

It is important to refrain from using store-bought denture cleaners or soaking your dentures overnight, as these products often contain Purex® (a harsh cleaning chemical) that can damage your dentures. This can lead to discoloration and diminished aesthetics. Therefore, sticking to a daily cleaning routine and seeking help from our office for thorough cleanings is the preferred approach.

Wearing Your Dentures:

Using your dentures as intended is vital to your oral health. They are designed to be used daily and help prevent your gum and bone tissue from atrophying. Consistently wearing them allows your mouth to adapt to their presence and prevents potential complications that may arise from prolonged non-use.
